I woke up before sunrise and wandered into an almost empty Piazza del Duomo. The Gothic façade of the cathedral seemed to glow in the pale dawn light, every spire and carved detail taking on a soft blue hue. To my left, the silhouette of an imposing equestrian monument and its lion companion anchored the square, their dark forms contrasting with the delicate stonework ahead. A few pigeons picked their way across the silent plaza, and the usual crowds were nowhere to be seen. In that brief, quiet moment between night and day, I felt as if I had the heart of Milan all to myself — a serene pause in a city that rarely sleeps.
